5 Strategies for Coping with Stress

Constant deadlines and competing priorities can create anxiety and burnout, resulting in a decline in your mental health. Reducing your stress levels will create a healthier and happier life, but it is not always easy to take care of yourself. Once you realize you are stressed, what can you do about it?

 

Here are 5 strategies to help you cope.

 

1. Get moving

 

Physical activity is a stress reliever and helps improve your sleep. Find ways to get active. Clean your house, walk around the block, download a fitness app or jog on the spot. When your body feels good, your mind feels good, too.

 

2. Eat properly

 

Inhaling that bag of chips or that chocolate bar may seem like a good idea at the time, but all that added sugar and fat may actually worsen your mood. Instead, eat a healthy, well-balanced diet to boost your immune system and make your body stronger.

 

3. Pursue a hobby

 

Find ways to express your creativity. Have fun by relaxing, laughing, and doing things you enjoy. Make time in your day to paint, read a book, photograph nature or call a friend.

 

4. Create healthy boundaries

 

Leave stress at school/work. Aim for a balanced, holistic life, which may mean some external environmental changes. Examine the internal expectations that may be driving you to do what you do. Set realistic goals for yourself. Recognize your own limitations, prioritize and say “no” more often.

 

5. Seek support

 

Check in with people who care about you. Do not be ashamed to reach out. Talking regularly with a counsellor or mentor can bring balance to your life.
